[Bird Video Series] #3: Birds of Paradise

If you still haven’t seen the Planet Earth series, let me give you a sneak peek here. David Attenborough narrates this incredible clip of several different Birds of Paradise. Each has its own elaborate, colorful, sometimes mesmerizing mating display. These birds are no larger than your average chicken but their displays truly rival that of the Peacock. I remember the first time I saw this, I was so blown away I had to rewind it and watch it again, just to be sure I wasn’t hallucinating. Enjoy!

  1. Couldn’t agree more; it’s an astonishing segment in a miraculous series. It’s hard to choose a favourite out of so many remarkable creatures and documentary segments, but the snow leopard sequence is tough to beat! But then there’s…..and also…..and even………
    Simply brilliant! All of it.

    • Oh man, that snow leopard sequence is truly amazing – did you watch the “planet earth diaries” about it? Those poor guys were out there for weeks, seeing nothing, and then in an instant they had to capture 1) interaction between cub and mom 2) general behvior and 3) a hunt!! Those docs blow me away. In fact, they’re my winter escape! It gets so cold and dark and icy here that in the evenings I tend to watch all of the David Attenborough stuff to keep myself from going crazy. It’s like a winter ritual for me! (Well, I also watch the Lord of the Rings trilogy – extended editions, obviously – but a girl’s gotta go what a girl’s gotta do.)

  2. I have indeed seen the diaries that go along with it! They’re almost as good as the series itself, bringing a fascinating aspect of the process to the viewer’s attention. They also fill in some of the details of landscape and ecosystem and habitat which are crucial to our understanding of the creatures’ lives. Certainly a fan, only bettered by being out on the land ourselves!
